No injuries were reported when a semi tractor trailer slammed into the rear of an Indiana Department of Transportation truck in Vermillion County Indiana early Tuesday. The crash occurred shortly before 8:30 a.m. along State Road 63 at the Interstate 74 interchange.
The preliminary investigation revealed the INDOT truck was unoccupied. It had an activated arrow board warning drivers to move into the passing lane because of workers ahead who were performing routine highway maintenance. The semi failed to switch lanes, according to investigating officers, and hit the INDOT truck’s arrow board and impact attenuator.
The northbound lanes of SR 63 were closed for about three and a half hours so the road could be cleared of debris. The semi driver – a 61-year-old man from Gary, Indiana – was cited for failure to yield to a highway maintenance vehicle.
The crash was investigated by Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement and Indiana State Police from the Lafayette District. Also assisting at the scene were Vermillion County and Warren County Indiana Sheriff’s Police.
