Danville District 118 School Board members will consider some changes in the Standard of Dress Policy when they meet Wednesday evening (April 25, 2018). Earlier this month results of surveys taken during parent-teacher conferences showed many students, parents and teachers are looking for change in the policy. School Board President Bill Dobbles said it appeared that most of those who took the survey want a dress code that is not so strict.
The new Student Dress Code going before the board at Wednesday’s meeting says no tank tops, halter tops, strapless tops, spaghetti straps or camisoles are allowed. Jackets may be worn, but winter coats may not be worn in the classrooms or cafeteria. No midriff may be exposed. And any item determined by the building administrator(s) to be too tight or revealing is not allowed.
Dresses must not be strapless or have spaghetti straps. Dresses and skirts must be no shorter than approximately mid-thigh or 3 inches above the knee. No low cut garments are allowed. And no leather, mesh, nylon/vinyl/spandex, see-through material or cutouts are allowed.
Pants must be worn at the waist and must be fastened. If a belt is used it must be buckled. And no yoga pants, pajama pants, leather, mesh, flannel or fleece, or nylon/vinyl/spandex pants are allowed.
Those are just some of the items listed on the policy going before the school board Wednesday. It also says the Board prohibits dress or grooming that conveys any message that promotes or encourages behavior that is inconsistent with the basic educational message of the District, such as tobacco, alcohol or illegal drug use, physical or sexual violence, or gang affiliation.
The board meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Jackson Building at 516 North Jackson.
