Illinois State Police say the arrest of a suspect in criminal damage to vehicles along Interstate 74 was ‘’truly like finding a needle in a haystack.’’ A two-month long investigation was capped this week with the arrest of 53-year-old Kevin Casey of Janesville, Wisconsin in the case.
During a news conference Monday, State Police said they are currently investigating a total of 45 vehicles suffering damage over the past two months along I-74 in Vermilion, Champaign, Piatt and DeWitt Counties. The investigation also includes multiple states to the east including Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia and Virginia.
Captain Jason Henderson says reports of damage started to increase in early May…
Illinois State Police say they take these acts of violence very seriously as they represent clear and present danger to the public and have the capacity to create serious injuries, crashes, and/or kill the innocent motoring public.
On Monday a judge refused to lower Casey’s bond which is currently set at $2-million dollars. He faces charges of aggravated battery, aggravated battery to a child, and criminal damage to property.
State Police say Casey used a sling-shot and ball bearings to damage the vehicles as he drove his truck along the interstate.
State Police also said Monday that the investigation has been a joint effort involving numerous entities. Among them were Special Agents from Illinois State Police Zone 5 Investigations, Patrol Troopers from Illinois State Police Districts 10 and 6, the Champaign and Vermilion County State’s Attorney’s Offices, Champaign County Sheriff’s Department, Champaign, Urbana and Oakwood Police Departments, and many other entities within the Illinois State Police that assisted during the investigation. And they add the investigation continues.
