Champaign Area Hit Hard by Storms

Damage assessments continue across East-Central Illinois and West-Central Indiana following strong storms on Sunday (June 10, 2018).  In Champaign County, Emergency Management Agency Director John Dwyer says no one was hurt but about two-dozen structures were damaged after storms that prompted tornado warnings.  Dwyer says most of the damage was in Champaign’s Copper Ridge subdivision, with two homes sustaining heavy roof damage.  A grain bin near Longview was also damaged.

Dwyer adds that after a malfunction of the warning system last week, this time emergency sirens were working.  But he adds there was not enough information to sound them…

Sue Grey of the United Way was in the Cherry Hills subdivision of Champaign, near Copper Ridge, when the storm hit….

Dwyer added that although about two-dozen structures were damaged in Champaign County there were no reports of any injuries.  The National Weather Service will be doing damage assessments from the storm in the coming days.
