A retired chief financial officer at Danville Area Community College, who had served as director of the NJCAA Division II Men’s National Basketball Tournament here, has died. Dick Shockey died early Saturday in St. Louis.
In 2014 Shockey was named the Danville AMBUCS First Citizen.
Mike Hulvey, a co-director of the NJCAA Basketball Tournament in Danville, reacted to word of Shockey’s death. ‘’Dick was a quiet giant within our community,’’ said Hulvey. ‘’It was Dick’s vision that brought the NJCAA Tournament to Danville. It was his leadership that ensured it thrived for 25 years. He will be remembered as a selfless leader who was dedicated to things greater than himself. This community will be forever grateful,’’ added Hulvey.
When he was named Danville’s First Citizen by the AMBUCS in 2014, Shockey turned the attention away from him. ‘’It’s more of an honor for all the volunteers,’’ said Shockey. Each year about 350 volunteers help at the national tournament.
The First Citizen Award is given to a Danville area man or woman who has contributed significantly to the betterment of the community through a single or multiple projects, personally or professionally.
