There was no mad rush of candidates today (Monday, November 19, 2018) as the filing period began for the February 26th Danville City Primary Election.
A few candidates were standing in line when the Danville Board of Elections Commission opened its doors, though. Donald Crews was first in line and filed petitions to run for mayor. But since current mayor Rickey Williams Jr. was also in line at 8:00 o’clock a lottery will determine their ballot position.
Others who filed petitions included:
- Brenda Brown who is seeking re-election to the City Council as Ward 1 alderwoman;
- Rick Strebing, seeking another term as alderman from Ward 2;
- Sharon Pickering, who filed seeking re-election in Ward 3;
- Michael O’Kane, who wants another term as Ward 4 alderman;
- Jon Cooper, seeking another term as Ward 6 alderman;
- Aaron Troglia, who hopes to oust Cooper and become the new Ward 6 alderman.
Candidates have until 5:00 p.m. next Monday – November 26th – to get their petitions filed. The Danville Board of Election Commission Office will be closed both Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday.
It takes five candidates running for an individual office in order to require a primary vote in February according to Danville Election Commission Executive Director Sandy Delhaye. If it turns out there is no need for the primary, candidates would square off in the General Election on April 2nd, 2019.
