The year 2018 will be remembered in the Danville area as a year of both highs and lows. It will also be remembered as a year of change.
One of the highs came early in the year when Schlarman Academy’s Girls Basketball Team won its first state championship. Another high came when Danville native who has gone real high as astronaut Joe Tanner returned home and made several presentations….
[Tanner is shown giving one of those presentations in the photo above. He is a 1968 graduate of Danville High School.]
One of the lows of 2018 is the fact that the number of homicides in Danville had climbed to a dozen by the end of the year. The Three Kings of Peace, some other local citizens, and Danville Public Safety Director Larry Thomason called on the public for help to end the violence….
The latest fatal shooting occurred earlier this month.
Some of the other memories of 2018: It was the year that county offices found a new home at what was once Danville’s main post office building. The former Bresee Tower became Collins Tower in downtown Danville as new owners announced plans to restore the building. And it was during 2018 that efforts were made to change Danville’s form of government. The city of Danville got a new mayor, and the Vermilion County Farm Bureau celebrated its 100th anniversary.
