Danville Area Community College Trustees are expected to consider a request Thursday evening to name the basketball court in the Mary Miller Gymnasium. DACC President Stephen Nacco says the local committee that spearheads the National Junior College Athletic Association Men’s Division II National Basketball Tournament has asked that the court be named Dick Shockey Court.
‘’It will always be Mary Miller Gym,’’ said President Nacco. But he says naming court after the man who led the National Basketball Tournament for 25 years before his death ‘’recognizes him not only for what he did for the college but the community as well.’’
Shockey served as the Chief Financial Officer at Danville Area Community College, but Nacco says he ‘’kept a firewall’’ between the college’s finances and those of the tournament.
Also during their meeting Thursday evening the DACC Trustees are expected to act on applying for some surplus federal property – the old Army Reserve Center on East Main Street.
President Nacco says it is an opportunity to run a whole host of college programs at that location. Nacco says they include everything from Workforce Development and Corporate Education classes to tractor-trailer training and sustainability programs.
Congressman John Shimkus is spearheading the effort to acquire the former Army Reserve Center for the college.
