As dangerously cold weather moved toward East Central Illinois Monday, local school superintendents were keeping a close eye on it.
Several area school districts cancelled classes for Tuesday (January 29, 2019) — including Westville — because of the weather.
Westville Unit 2 Superintendent Seth Miller (in photo) says he does not like to speculate too far in advance because each weather related issue can be very unique and unpredictable. He added a forecast with extremely cold temperatures will make the District consider whether or not road conditions allow for safe transportation to school. Likewise, the Westville Superintendent added a consideration will be given on the fact some students may need access to warm buildings and food.
Miller says ultimately the decision on closing schools is based on the best information available with the primary focus on student safety.
Scott Watson, Superintendent of the Bismarck-Henning School District, says they consider the wind chill factor and road conditions – and if the weather is going to warm up by early morning in making closing decisions. And Watson adds for road conditions he drives some of the roads himself, but relies heavily on the opinions of two road commissioners in the Bismarck – Henning area.
