State Representative Mike Marron of Fithian wanted opinions from some local teenagers on issues ranging from legalizing marijuana to education, so he invited some to his office. His audience was ten students from Danville High School and Schlarman Academy.
Sarah Craig, a senior at Schlarman, wondered whether legalizing marijuana might allow some state funds to be used elsewhere…
Representative Marron was asked how legalization of marijuana might impact hiring at local businesses and industries….
One student told Representative Marron she thinks it’s a misconception that ‘’people are going to go wild’’ if marijuana is legalized. And she added it could act as an incentive to keep people from moving out of Illinois.
And when the discussion turned to a bill proposing raising the smoking age to 21, Angel Perez, a senior at Schlarman Academy, told Representative Marron that many young people have switched from using regular cigarettes….

And one student wondered whether school districts have upgraded their discipline policy to cover E cigarettes. ‘’You can walk home and you don’t smell like smoke. And that makes it all the more dangerous,’’ the student told Marron.
Representative Marron told the students he is impressed with the careers they plan to pursue. And he also reminded them there are good jobs waiting for them here in Vermilion County. Meanwhile one student discovered a college where it was cheaper to pay out-of-state tuition than attend a college here in Illinois.
