The 8th Annual First Grade Math Challenge had teams of first-graders competing at Danville High School today (Friday). Rena Pate, who is now a retired Danville teacher, explains what gave her the idea to invent the competition….
Pate notes high school students were at each table to encourage the first-graders…but they could not help them get their answers….
Students were required to show how they got their answers. Pate enjoys the competition….
Parents and grandparents of the students cheered as students were awarded ribbons for their hard work.
>>>Here are some examples of the questions:
”On Monday each Meade Park 1st grader completes 5 math problems. Each day they are going to complete 4 more problems than the day before. How many will each student complete on Friday?”
”Show 3 different ways to represent the number 75. Is the number 75 odd or even?”
