Legislation allowing for the formation of a Coal Ash Task Force, and sponsored by State Representative Mike Marron, has cleared an Illinois House committee. Marron is optimistic the legislation will continue to advance….
Dynegy closed the former coal-fired Vermilion Power Plant in 2011. It sits on a bluff above the National Scenic Middle Fork River. ‘’There are 3.3 million cubic yards of coal ash – produced over the plant’s 55-year operating life – that are currently stored in three pits on the site,’’ said Marron.
Marron says the task force would include two Senators and two Representatives selected by the legislative caucus leaders, an Illinois Environmental Protection Agency representative, a representative of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois, a representative from environmental groups, and one representing the business community.
