Some powerful winds accompanying severe thunderstorms early today in our area have downed power lines and trees in some areas. The power was knocked out for hundreds of people in the Danville – Vermilion County area.
The storm hit around 2:45 this morning (May 23, 2019), and by 6:00 a.m. Ameren and other power companies in our region had much of the power back on.
We have received no reports of storm-related injuries in our area, but there is some scattered light property damage. Danville Firefighters responded to the Extra Space Storage building on North Vermilion Street when an air-exchange unit on the roof overheated. Firefighters used fans to remove some smoke from the building.
Firefighters also responded to several calls of power lines down.
In some areas trees or limbs have fallen across streets or rural roads. There are also some areas where the heavy rain has flooded roads. Motorists are reminded that you should never drive through areas where water is running across a road. You and your vehicle could be swept away by the floodwaters.
