Demolition begins today (Monday, July 8, 2019) on six buildings at the Fair Oaks Public Housing area in Danville. Residents who were living in those buildings have been relocated.
The Housing Authority of Danville says the buildings will not be replaced. In fact, Jacqueline Vinson, Executive Director of the Authority, (shown here) says there will never be new structures like these again….
”They found out in the eighties, nineties, that that model of housing does not work. So what we are looking for as a Housing Authority is as we take down phase one of demolition – as we take down — there will be a phase two, what housing needs to mean for our community — and how we might be able to get into that arena.”
Vinson adds that as these buildings come down, the Housing Authority is working on a phase two demolition plan for Fair Oaks. She says once the site is cleared there will be some improvements on the green spaces left behind. Those improvements will include such things as park pavilions and grills.
