Veterans and other supporters packed the Catlin American Legion Post Thursday evening to help following a recent burglary there.
Dave Switzer is with American Legion Post 210 in Danville…
{We’re here to support the Legion here,” said Switzer. ”You know they broke into ’em, stole a bunch of money, tore the place up. We just want to show them our support.”}
Dan Rogers of Urbana is a retired Sergeant First Class with the Illinois National Guard and is also a Marine. He, too, decided to attend the re-opening of the Catlin Legion….
{”We had it happen in Urbana you know (2 years ago). And with the type of people that are around now days – they break in. And it’s bad enough that they break in and steal stuff, but then all the damage that they do and everything just costs more money too,”} Rogers told VermilionCountyFirst.com News.
Mike Doggett serves as Vice Commander of the Catlin Legion and says the outpouring of support since the burglary last weekend has been amazing…
{Oh, it’s been fantastic. It about put me down to my knees,” said Doggett. ”I am so happy with everybody coming in. Friends, family, outsiders, you name it – they’re here,” said Doggett.
Outside the Legion, Kevin Gombert of Danville brought his ice cream truck to the post. A Veteran himself, Gombert was selling ice cream with 100-percent of the profits to be donated to the Catlin Legion.
The cheeseburgers were flying out the door at the Catlin Legion Thursday night as citizens stopped by to pick up carry-out orders. Meanwhile, inside the Legion the Veterans shared stories about their service to our country.
For now Doggett says the Catlin American Legion will be open on Thursdays from 1:00 until 9:00 p.m. and Sundays from noon until 8:00 p.m. But he expects hours will be expanded in the near future.
