Summer vacations are over for some teachers and students in our area. The new school year begins today (Monday, July 22nd) at Northeast Elementary Magnet School in Danville.
Justin Thorlton was recently named as the new principal of the school. He had been the principal of Garfield School. Thorlton replaced former Northeast principal Markesha Parker who resigned. Nicole Zaayer will be the new principal at Garfield Elementary School.
Northeast school operates on a balanced calendar in which students start the year earlier, but get breaks in the fall and spring. Classes are taught in 9 week blocks, with a three week break in October and March, a two week break in December, and an approximately six week long summer break.
Supporters of the balanced calendar schedule think it helps kids retain what they have learned. The school also places a strong emphasis on nutrition.
