Traffic is flowing normally again along Interstate 74, just east of the Illinois-Indiana line, following a serious accident in that area Saturday (July 27, 2019). Vermillion County Indiana Sheriff’s Police say the crash involved two semi tractor trailers and four other vehicles. And deputies say a third semi slid off the highway to avoid impacting the wreckage.
The crash occurred in the west-bound lanes of the Interstate at the four mile marker around 3:15 p.m. Initial reports from the Vermillion County (Indiana) Sheriff’s Department say at least two people were critically injured and one seriously hurt. Some others were also hurt, including some who were just treated on the scene.
Those initial reports from the Sheriff’s Department say two females, a male and an infant were transported to OSF Sacred Heart Medical Center in Danville. Some were expected to be air-evacuated for treatment elsewhere.
Names of the injured and their home towns were not released. And since no names were released updates on their condition were unavailable.
One of the semi trucks involved was hauling chocolate, and it spilled all over the road when the trailer flipped onto its side.
Sheriff’s Police told VermilionCountyFirst.com News an Indiana State Police reconstruction unit is assisting in trying to determine how the crash occurred. For now, the chain-reaction crash remains under investigation.
There was some fuel leakage and the Perrysville Fire and Rescue were called to the scene. Numerous other emergency personnel also assisted at the scene, including not only units from Vermillion County, but Fountain and Warren County as well.
The crash was first reported at 3:17 p.m. Saturday and that area of Interstate 74 was not re-opened until twelve hours later. Again, both the east and westbound traffic is now moving normally through the area where the crash occurred.
