The American Legion State Golf Tournament is getting ready to tee off in Danville. Greg Alpers is the coordinator of the event….
{”The American Legion State Golf Tournament this year will be going into its 5th consecutive year here in Danville,” said Alpers. ”The tournament itself is this weekend – the 3rd and 4th of August. The opening ceremony starts promptly at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning at Harrison Park.”}
Alpers was able to land the tournament for Danville after it had earlier been held for 36 consecutive years in Champaign-Urbana. Alpers says there was a three year break when, unfortunately, the man who had directed in Champaign County died….
{”We started the tournament for the first time in Danville in 2015. At that time the first tournament attracted 26 teams, I believe, four-man teams,” said Alpers. ”As the years went by it gradually increased. Last year we had our biggest growth in the tournament. We grew by 10 or 12 teams, I believe. We had a total of 49 teams last year – which was 196 players.”}
Alpers adds the tournament has allowed American Legion Post 210 in Danville to donate approximately $12-thousand dollars over the past four years to several programs. They have included training of dogs to help Veterans with PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), Wreaths Across America, and Boys State.
