A multiple vehicle crash along Interstate 74, just across the state line on Saturday, has claimed a life. Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup says 17-year-old Jasmine Morris of Ambia, Indiana died Monday. Morris died at 11:19 a.m. at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana from traumatic injuries received in the crash, according to Northrup.
The teen had been a back seat passenger in a vehicle that was involved in the crash in Vermillion County, Indiana. Coroner Northrup says no autopsy will be performed however an inquest may be held later.
Morris’ death remains under investigation by the Champaign County Coroner’s Office and Vermillion County, Indiana Sheriff’s Police.
According to preliminary information released earlier by Vermillion County, Indiana Sheriff’s Police, a semi truck which was traveling along the interstate failed to slow when traffic slowed or stopped ahead of it. The semi hit another vehicle triggering a chain-reaction crash involving five vehicles. The crash caused both the east and westbound traffic along the interstate to be detoured for about twelve hours – from mid-afternoon Saturday to early Sunday.
