I-74 Lanes Re-Open After Fatal Crash

All lanes along Interstate 74 near Oakwood are open this morning (Friday, August 2, 2019) following two crashes in that area Thursday afternoon.  One of them killed the driver of a semi tractor trailer when the victim failed to slow down and hit the rear of another semi, according to Illinois State Police.

The truck being driven by the victim became engulfed in flames.

Vermilion County Coroner Jane McFadden says the victim was pronounced dead on the scene.  She said late Thursday that efforts were underway to identify the male victim so that family members could be notified.

The semi hit by the victim’s truck struck a third semi tractor trailer in the rear.  Troopers said the drivers of the two semis which were rear-ended were not hurt.  The crash occurred along the westbound lanes of Interstate 74 near the Oakwood exit shortly before 3:00 p.m.   It was not until 1 o’clock this morning that State Police announced the westbound lanes were back open.

The crash involving the 3 semis was one of two crashes in that area Thursday.  In the other, Illinois State Police say Ronald C. Schaer of Danville suffered life-threatening injuries.  Schaer was the driver of a van that failed to reduce speed and struck the rear of a semi trailer, according to troopers.  State Police say the semi had slowed due to single lane traffic in a construction zone.  The driver of the semi was not hurt in the accident which occurred about four miles west of the Oakwood exit around 2:15 p.m.
