Kickapoo Rail Trail to Benefit From Event

Kickapoo Rail Trail to Benefit From Event

The Vermilion County Conservation District Foundation is getting set to host its annual Cheeseburgers & Fun event on Saturday (August 10th).   Laura Darling, Education Supervisor for the Conservation District, says admission to the event at Kennekuk County Park is free….

{”There’s going to be a cruise-in car show starting at noon and going on until like 9:00 p.m., with cars, trucks, tractors – any antique vehicle, custom vehicles are welcome to come out for that,” said Darling. ”And we also have food vendors out for the day.  And then the Bunker Hill Historic buildings will also be open, so people can tour through those and look in those.”}

The Vermilion Voles vintage baseball team will also be hosting its Baseball Jamboree that day with games starting at noon.

The public will be able to get grilled cheeseburgers, chips and a drink for $6 starting at 3:00 p.m. Saturday. Darling says after a change last year they decided to go back to the old way of grilling the cheeseburgers.

Donations will also be accepted and Darling explained where the money goes….

{This year all the money that’ raised at the ‘Cheeseburgers and Fun’ event this Saturday will be going toward the future development and construction of the Kickapoo Rail Trail.  The Kickapoo Rail Trail – it’s about a 26-mile long trail that will be from Kickapoo State Park all the way to Urbana.  And it basically paralels route 150.}

A segment of the Kickapoo Rail Trail from St. Joseph to Urbana is already open, and work is underway in the Oakwood area to extend it.

Darling says bids are now being reviewed for the second phase of the trail in Vermilion County, including work on a railroad trestle near the county fairgrounds….

{”They have all of the engineering and design work done for that segment that goes from Grey’s Siding through the park to the Vermilion County Fairgrounds.  Construction bids were submitted and opened last Friday, August 2nd,” said Darling.  ”So right now what they are doing is they are reviewing the construction contracts that were bid, making sure all the ‘Ts’ are crossed and all the ‘Is’ are dotted before they award a construction contract for that stretch.”}

And Darling adds work on that segment of the Kickapoo Rail Trail is expected to begin next spring.  Eventually the trial is planned to run from Kickapoo State Park to Urbana.
