Vermilion County Coroner Jane McFadden says her office and Illinois State Police are continuing their investigation into a courthouse shooting incident which occurred Friday (August 23, 2019). The Coroner says 55-year-old Daryl L. Perkins of Hoopeston is the man who died after he was shot. She says an autopsy was performed on Saturday.
Sheriff Pat Hartshorn had said Friday that the shooting occurred in the inmate holding area on the first floor of the Vermilion County Courthouse. The Sheriff says an inmate stabbed a deputy multiple times in the face, and the deputy then shot the inmate.
Although there were numerous other people in the courthouse at the time nobody else was hurt. The holding area is located outside a small first floor courtroom.
Other officers rushed to the scene when the dispatch went out that shots had been fired at the courthouse. And many people have praised the quick response of those officers and the action taken by courthouse employees and supervisors who made sure other people were safe.
