The Danville Public Library wrapped up its annual summer reading program this month with record-breaking participation.
This year, 287 children ages 0-18 read 11,091 books over the span of 1,164,555 minutes—or, two years’ worth of reading in just two months. Participation increased 33% from the previous year.
Each summer, the Youth Services Department creates a reading chain, comprised of strips of construction paper—each link representing one book read. This summer, the chain loops around the Children’s Room eight times, also setting a new record.
“The summer reading program is a joint effort encompassing many local businesses and agencies,” says Youth Services Director Lisa Abdelghani. “We want to thank all the donors who gave prizes as incentives for reading. From food coupons, gift cards, bowling and Y passes, to tickets for Danville Dans baseball games, all these help children and families get out into the community visiting local establishments; thus helping encourage a sense of community, benefiting all.”
This year’s summer reading program theme was “It’s Showtime At Your Library!” Other activities included an adult summer reading contest, with two participants winning $50 gift cards; a return visit from Musician Mr. Stephens and Magician Greg Loschen; a program featuring Mad Science of St. Louis; and performances during the Saturday Farmers’ Market from DLO Musical Theatre and Red Mask Players.
“A huge thank you to our own Danville Library Foundation. The summer reading program grant we received helps fund this outstanding program,” adds Abdelghani.
