A former Chief of the Lynch Area Fire Department has died unexpectedly. Fire departments around the county are mourning the loss of Scott Weidig, who had spent more than half his life serving as a volunteer firefighter. He resigned as Lynch Chief at the end of 2014 when he was 52.
Weidig had originally planned on trying to get on a paid department, like Danville, but said he enjoyed doing what he was doing as a volunteer.
Vermilion County Coroner Jane McFadden says Weidig was pronounced dead at his home in Tilton at 6:47 a.m. (Monday, September 23, 2019). She says his death is from natural causes.
‘’You hate to lose good people like that,’’ added Coroner McFadden. She says Weidig cared a lot about his community.
