New numbers show Vermilion County’s unemployment rate last month hit the lowest August level on record for the county. The 5.2 percent rate is down 1.3 percent from where it stood in August of last year. The numbers in the report have not been seasonally adjusted. The figures were released in a new report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Illinois Department of Employment Security.
Vermilion County’s unemployment rate fell from 5.4 percent in July to 5.2 in August (2019). Danville saw its jobless rate fall from 6.5 to 6.0 percent.
The report shows non-farm employment rose by 700 in Vermilion County compared to last August. Job gains were reported in several sectors of the county. There were 200 more jobs in the Financial Services sector compared to August of 2018. In the Retail Trade category the county gained 200 jobs. And the Government….Professional and Business Services…and Manufacturing categories each showed gains of 100 employees compared to a year ago in Vermilion County. In fact, Vermilion County, Champaign County, and the Carbondale-Marion area showed the largest job gains for August among the state’s twelve metropolitan areas.
In Edgar County the jobless rate fell from 4.2 percent in July to 3.8 in August. In Iroquois County the jobless rate fell slightly falling from 3.7 to 3.6 percent.
