Danville Mayor Rickey Williams Junior says two positions are set to be filled at Tuesday’s (October 1st, 2019) Danville City Council meeting. One of them is a new Alderman for Ward 1 to fill the vacancy created when Williams became Danville’s Mayor. Robert Williams – who is not related to the Mayor – is being appointed as the new alderman. Robert Williams is retired and has been active with the NAACP in Danville.
Also Tuesday Charles ‘Chuck’ Mockbee IV is expected to be approved as the new Danville Corporation Counsel, replacing David Wesner. And with those two positions being filled the city has begun the search to fill another. City Comptroller Shelly Scott is leaving next month to take a new position out of state. The Comptroller, of course, plays a key role in the preparation of Danville’s budgets.
The City Council meets at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday and is also scheduled to act on a resolution accepting the recommendation of a casino operating partner. A presentation on the casino will be made just before the vote.
Mayor Williams had said earlier that if all goes as planned the temporary casino could be open by the end of next summer. However, as reported in our story last week, the Planned Unit Development package to be considered Thursday (October 3rd) by the Danville Area Planning and Zoning Commission says construction of the casino is not expected to begin until February of 2021. The Certificate of Occupancy for the temporary casino is not expected until February 1, 2022. The permanent casino is expected to be completed August 1, 2023 according to the preliminary time-table in information submitted to the Danville Area Planning and Zoning Commission.
The Commission meets at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, October 3rd, to consider approving the Planned Unit Development request for the casino.
