The Illinois Freedom Project exhibit opens Thursday, October 3rd, 2019 at the Vermilion County Museum in Danville. The five panel display presents the stories of freedom through the lens of the people, places, and events covering 200 years of Illinois history.
The special exhibit is being hosted by the Vermilion County Museum Society, in conjunction with Looking for Lincoln, the National Park Service, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. It will be at the Vermilion County Museum for the next two months – from Thursday, October 3rd through December 3rd, 2019.
The Illinois Freedom Project examines the struggle to achieve the dream of freedom in Illinois. The stories are presented through families and neighborhoods…communities…laws, and average people becoming leaders and taking a stand. The Museum Society is augmenting the exhibit with information about early abolitionists, freedom fighters, and leaders within Vermilion County.
A special Open House will be held on Thursday, October 3rd from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the Museum. Timothy P. Townsend, Chief of Interpretation and Historian at the Lincoln Home National Site will give a brief presentation on the project and the exhibit. His comments will be followed by tours of the exhibit and light refreshments.
