A crash involving four vehicles along Illinois route one near Georgetown Wednesday morning (October 9, 2019) has claimed a life. Vermilion County Coroner Jane McFadden says 29-year-old Tyler J. Pope of Danville has died from injuries suffered in the crash.
A 7-year-old boy who was traveling with Pope was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. His name has not been released.
Illinois State Police say their preliminary investigation found that Pope was driving a car southbound on route one when it struck another car in the rear. The second car was being driven by a 40-year-old Oakwood man and careened off the highway into a field. Pope’s car then struck a third vehicle in the rear – a pickup truck – before crossing into the northbound lanes and hitting a sport utility vehicle head-on.
The driver of the sport utility vehicle – a 20-year-old Georgetown man – and Oakwood man were taken to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Illinois State Police are continuing to investigate the crash which occurred shortly before 8 o’clock Wednesday morning. All lanes of the highway are now open after being closed for several hours Wednesday during the investigation. Pope’s name is the only one which has been released by authorities.
