A single-vehicle crash in West Central Indiana late Friday night (October 11, 2019) has left an Indiana State Trooper dead. Twenty-seven year old Trooper Peter Stephan of Lafayette was killed when his squad car left Old State Road 25 in Tippecanoe County. He had been a State Trooper in Indiana the past four years.
According to the preliminary investigation, Trooper Stephan was traveling northbound on Old State Road 25, south of Stair Road, when his police car left the road at a curve for some unknown reason. Trooper Stephan’s car rolled at least once before striking a utility pole. State Police say Trooper Stephan was going to help another trooper who had called for assistance in Americus prior to the crash.
‘’This is a tremendously sad day for the entire Indiana State Police family,’’ said Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas Carter. ‘’We will band together as we always do in support of Trooper Stephan’s family, friends, and co-workers,’’ added Superintendent Carter.
Trooper Stephan was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. He is survived by his wife and six-month-old daughter.
As the investigation into this tragedy continues, Indiana State Police have announced the establishment of an account to aid the trooper’s family. Donations on behalf of the family of Trooper Stephan may be made at any Old National Bank branch location under the name: ‘Indiana Fallen Heroes Foundation/Peter Stephan’.
