Work is getting underway this week on safety improvements to a Griffin Street railroad crossing where a boy was struck and killed in 2017. Assistant City Engineer Eric Childers says the Griffin Street CSX Railroad crossing near Garfield Park will be closed to all traffic starting at 7:00 a.m. Thursday (November 7, 2019) to complete the upgrade. It is not expected to re-open until 4 o’clock Friday, November 22nd.
All Griffin Street traffic which uses the crossing will need to choose an alternate route to avoid delays.
Childers says the project will add dedicated pedestrian crossings and approaches on the east and west sides of Griffin Street to separate the pedestrian traffic from vehicular traffic. CSX Railroad will be adding roadway gates along with pedestrian gates and other improvements.
Only local traffic will be permitted on Griffin Street south of Fairchild to the worksite until the project is completed.
