WDAN sportscaster Fowler Connell received the Distinguished Media Service Award from the IHSA during last night’s Danville Vikings game. The award recognizes his many years of work promoting the values of high school sports & activities and the service to the community that benefitted from the coverage during his time in local media.
After serving in the US Navy in World War II, he began working for the News Gazette in 1949, and then moved to the Commercial News in 1952 where he worked for 37 years until his retirement in 1990. He has spent the last 30 years broadcasting local football and basketball games on 1490 WDAN, including last night’s DHS basketball game.
The award was presented by Danville High School Athletic Director, Mark Bacys, who nominated him for the award. During the presentation, Fowler said “I’ve been in the sports business a long time, and I certainly appreciate this award.”
Now age 95, Fowler shows no signs of stopping any time soon.
