Drivers in downtown Danville are once again able to use westbound lanes in front of Bresee Tower.
Public Works Director Carl Carpenter said that the westbound lanes have been reopened to traffic this week after having been closed due to falling façade from the downtown landmark. Drivers had been forced to use the middle turn lane. He said the Illinois Department of Transportation approved the plan.
The sidewalk in front of the tower is still closed, and the overhang scaffolding in front of the tower has been removed so that falling debris does not bounce off of it onto traffic.
The City of Danville received a $1.35 million estimate last month to demolish Bresee Tower, which has been vacant for years. The structure is still privately owned.
