The National Weather Service says its NOAA Weather Station in Champaign will be off the air for an extended period of time. The outage could last several months so the Weather Service says you should use alternative means to receive severe weather information.
The outage is due to a damaged coaxial cable. NOAA Weather Radio WXJ 76 in Champaign serves east central Illinois on a frequency of 162.550. A process is now underway to find a new location for the transmitter.
While the Champaign Weather Radio station is out of service citizens can get severe weather alerts from NOAA radio stations located in Newport, Indiana (at 162.425 MHC) or Paris (at 162.525 MHC).
