Danville City Council members are continuing their discussions on a tax levy, and one alderman is suggesting there be no increase in the property tax. Alderman Steve Nichols says it would still meet the needs of the police and fire pension fund…
Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. notes there would still need to be an increase in the Public Safety Pension Fee….
The council must approve its new tax levy next month and Mayor Williams says some people may think the city council is kicking the can down the road on funding for police and fire pensions….
Meanwhile, in other action at Tuesday night’s meeting, city council members approved renaming the Public Works Building on East Voorhees Street. It will now be known as the ‘’Scott Eisenhauer Municipal Building North’’ in honor of the man who served as Danville mayor from 2003 until early this month. Eisenhauer was the youngest person to ever serve as mayor.
Aldermen also rejected a proposal to rezone a small parcel of land in the 3500 block of north Vermilion Street. A small retail development had been proposed there but some neighbors on Thornhill Drive voiced concern about how light and noise from the business might impact their residential area.
And the city council approved an agreement for phase II engineering services for planned safety and other improvements at the intersection of Fairchild and Hazel Streets near Danville High School.
