The Danville Public Library has scheduled a number of special events this week which are all open to the public. Here is a rundown on those events:
May 21: Learn about basic Computer Security – malware, hackers, and identity theft – in the second floor meeting room from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Participants must be familiar with how to use a computer. The class is free, but seating is limited.
May 21: This Monday Matinee film is the true story of the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the U.S.-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years. Starring Tom Hanks. The movie will be shown at 2:00 p.m. in the first floor meeting room. Refreshments begin at 1:30 p.m.
May 21: In this TeenFlix movie, five medical school students experiment with near-death experiences to gain insight into the afterlife. The movie will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the second floor meeting room. For teens, ages 12-18.
May 22: Wee Wigglers story times contain songs, stories, and serious silliness for the youngest book-lovers. Offered on Tuesdays from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. in the Children’s Program Room, for children from birth up to 24 months, with a caregiver.
May 22: Kids’ Snack Club combines themed stories and snacks to educate children. Children will learn about butterflies and make yogurt and fruit butterflies. Kids’ Snack Club meets at 3:30 p.m. in the Children’s Program Room, for children, ages 5-18; children under 8 with a caregiver.
May 22: Teens are invited to Otaku Club, a celebration of Japanese manga, anime, and culture, featuring games and movies, at 5:00 p.m. in the second floor conference room. For teens, ages 12-18 years.
May 23: Preschool Pals Playgroup meets at 10:00 a.m. in the first floor meeting room. For children, ages 2-6 years, and their caregivers.
May 23: In this social media class, we will introduce and cover the basics of popular social media sites: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram. Participants should register for social media accounts before class; otherwise, they may stay after class for assistance. In the second floor meeting room from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.
May 23: Turn empty chip bags, spuds and chips into a whole grab bag of experimental fun at this month’s Teen DIY. Break open Potato Chip Science and munch your way through the areas of acoustics and aeronautics, forensics, and physiology. 5:00 p.m. in the first floor meeting room, for teens, ages 12 to 18.
May 24: The Teen Book Challenge will focus on Going Where It’s Dark by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor and will be held at 5:00 p.m. in the second floor conference room. For teens, ages 12-18.
May 24: Tween Gaming is a chance for children ages 8-11 to game together in the Children’s Program Room from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
May 25: Adults, 60 and older, are invited to Coffee Time to enjoy a hot cup of coffee or tea with snacks, games, and good conversation. This program is held on Fridays from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. in the first floor meeting room.
