There are good economic news stories in Vermilion County, and when they happen, they're called March Forth Moments. It could be new jobs coming to the area, a new buiness or an expansion, or even someone receiving an award or other recognition. They are all March Forth Moments.
This week the March Forth Moment salutes the 24 recent graduates of Leadership Tomorrow Class 25.
This group of 24 Vermilion County residents completed a 9-month long program
designed to assist emerging community leaders in preparing for positions in local government and community affairs. The program which is conducted by the Vermilion Advantage also requires a minimum of 75-hours of community volunteerism in addition to the assigned course work. This year's class project is the redesign of the Sign Post Forest in Downtown Danville. Improvements are underway now, with the project to be completed soon. Danville to Hollywood and now listed among the countries best high school show choirs…That's a March Forth Moment.
Congratulations to the Danville High School Contemporaries and Delegation show choirs; who last month finished with a top 10 national rating at the National Show Choir Finals held in Chicago. The students from Danville competed against a field of 30 schools representing 13 states in the finals. The top 10 national rating; caped off a year which included DHS Junior Christian Cunningham winning a national competition.

When local students achieve on a national basis, it’s a March Forth Moment.
This week the March Forth Moment salutes a group of students from North Ridge Middle School in Danville, who have earned a trip to the National History Bee in Atlanta. Peyton Blodgett, Sourin Paturi and Guin Zillman have earned a spot in the national championship competition to be held June 1st,as one of 300 students nationwide. The National History Bee is presented by the History Channel. These Danville students earned their place by competing at the Chicago Regional History Bee with 7th grader Blodgett taking a Top 10 finish and creating another March Forth Moment.

The March Forth Moment honors Danville’s 80th First Citizen, Sybil Mervis.
Mrs. Mervis has been honored as the 80th First Citizen by the Danville Chapter of AMBUCS for her lifetime dedication to helping others and giving back to her community. Her passion for children and education is but a small example of why she has carried forward with her mission of volunteer service to others. Mrs. Mervis has served on many local boards and led numerous community campaigns during her lifetime of service. Mrs. Sybil Mervis, Danville’s 80th First Citizen, truly a March Forth Moment.

The Vermilion Advantage recently released the results of a survey of the top 30 employers in Vermilion County indicating their future plans for job growth in our area.
The results indicate over 1800 positions will be filled in the next two years by these large employers. Among the type of positions being hired includes; Customer Service Representatives, Machine Production Operators, Food Preparation positions and Warehouse sector jobs. These five categories account for just 50% of the available positions indicated by the large employer group survey..
The good news for the local work force is that local large employers have a positive outlook and that training programs are available through our local community college.

The March Forth Moment salutes the newest inductees into the Vermilion County Business Hall of Fame. Sited for their individual business success along with a true commitment to building the local community through volunteer work, the class of 2013 includes:
The late Art Fleming. Mr. Fleming was a housing and commercial developer in Danville and Vermilion County for over four decades. Many families sleep under roof’s that Mr. Fleming built. The late Lowell Loving. Mr. Loving was a surveyor and mapper who was active in hundreds of commercial development projects throughout the area. The final member of the class of 2013 is Henry Clapp. Mr. Clapp and his family have built Full-Fill Industries into what is now considered the largest food aerosol manufacturer in the country.

The March Forth Moment salutes the NJCAA Men’s DII National Basketball Tournament. Celebrating its 20th year in Danville, the NJCAA Tournament has brought teams, coaches and fans to Danville Illinois in competition for a national championship. Leading the community effort for 20-years has been Dick Shockey. Since 1993, Dick’s team of over 300 volunteers and sponsors has made possible the hosting of one of the finest tournaments in the county. The March Forth Moment thanks Dick Shockey for his dedication and leadership to this tournament and making Danville Illinois a national destination. A renovation to the Mary Miller Complex on the DACC campus named “The William B. Black Health Professionals Center” was dedicated on October 24th. The renovation is part of a 17,000 square foot 3 phase project at the College and includes nine new classrooms, new space for physical education program, state of the art training equipment for academic programs, and energy-saving geothermal heating and cooling technology. The southern portion of the facility was named after Representative Bill Black for his efforts in securing funds for campus improvements during his tenure in office.

Boys & Girls' Club Annual Pancake Day
The Boys & Girls' Club is hosting their 4th Annual Pancake Day on Sunday May 19th from 7am to 1pm. Tickets are $5 per person. Children 3 and under eat for free.
All You Can Eat Breakfast Buffet
Veteran's of Foreign Wars, 8 Pine Street, Danville, will be having All You Can Eat Breakfast Buffet from 7am until 9:30am on May 18th. Menu includes eggs scrambled or your way, french toast, pancakes, biscuits, sausages, potatoes, white gravy with sausage, orange juice and coffee. Price is $6 and carry outs are available.
American Legion Car & Bike Show
The American Legion Riders are hosting a car & bike show on May 18th at Post 210 on Jackson St. in Danville. Come out and enjoy pulled pork sandwiches, desserts and drinks. There will be a 50/50 drawing and other prizes. There will also be an auction and a large rummage sale. Registration starts at 9am and awards will be at 1:30pm. There is a $10 entry fee.
Georgetown-Ridgefarm Family Carnival
Georgetown- Project Success of Vermilion County Inc. invites all Georgetown-Ridgefarm students and their families to the Family Carnival. It will be held on Monday May 20th from 4pm to 7pm at the Mary Miller Junior High School Track. This event will include inflatables such as bounce houses, obstacle courses, slides, 3D twister, and a hula hoop toss. Other activities include plinko, duck pond and a duck tank. Most activities are free! Hot dogs, snow cones, cotton candy and other food will be served at a low cost. Come check out our ''Survivor Georgetown: Deep Sea Exploration" booth for details on a free summer program for current 5th-8th grade students. Hazmat Technician Course
Danville Area Community College's Customized Corporate Education Division is offering a 24-hour Hazmat Technician course. Course will be held May 20th through 22nd from 8am to 5pm in the Industrial Training Center and room 142 of DACC's technology center. Cost for class is $450 including handouts. VA Focus Groups
The VA Illiana Health Care System will be conducting focus groups for the Veterans who receive care in Danville, IL to tell the VA how they're doing in providing care and services. Focus groups will take place Wednesday May 22nd and Thursday May 23rd at various times throughout the day. Travel pay is not authorized for. St James United Methodist Church will sponsor a blood drive with Community Blood Services of Illinois on Tuesday May 28th from 3pm to 7pm. The drive will be at 504 North Vermilion Street in Danville.

49th Annual Turtle Reunion Races
Knights of Columbus present the 49th annual Turtle Reunion Races on Saturday June 1st, 2013 from 12pm to 8pm at 310 Bryant Avenue in Danville, IL.
