There are good economic news stories in Vermilion County, and when they happen, they're called March Forth Moments.  It could be new jobs coming to the area, a new buiness or an expansion, or even someone receiving an award or other recognition.  They are all March Forth Moments.


March Forth Moment - June 10

This week the March Forth Moment highlights a number of economic development projects going on in Vermilion County.

In Oakwood the new $4m Pilot Truck Stop is taking shape. Once open in August, Pilot will employee 45 workers and feature 140 truck parking spaces….In Ridge Farm; community volunteers assisted with the building of a new city hall, while in Fairmount a new fire station was constructed also with the help of community volunteers…The Village of Belgium and Vermilion County recently completed renovation of Lyons Road and work to re-surface and re-build Henning Road is underway to support the expanded Full-Fill Industries on Henning's north side.

A Hoopeston March Forth Moment

This week the March Forth Moment focuses on the growth of the Hoopeston healthcare community.

The Hoopeston area is growing with over 300 people now employed as the healthcare industry leader in North County. The Hoopeston Community Hospital was founded in 1962; with the recent Carle merger complete, they have the financial stability to grow the healthcare industry in north county; $4M were invested in improvements to the surgery unit; the community formed a not for profit to take over management of their new 75 bed nursing home; they have a new, private assisted living facility. In addition Gibson City Hospital is also building a new clinic in Hoopeston to serve area residents.

A Dynasty Leaves Behind A Legacy

This week the March Forth Moment salutes the legacy left behind by the Duck Dynasty visit to Vermilion County.
 
The weekend of May 18th & 19th will long be remembered for the visit to Vermilion County by two members of the Duck Dynasty reality TV series.  It was their home spun style that entertained the thousands of audience members, but the real March Forth Moment came with a $100,000 donation to the community. Thanks to Cellular One, $26,000 was provided to the VA Homeless Veterans program and $71,000 to the Vermilion County Conservation District’s Environmental Education Center. Thanks to Cellular One and the Duck Dynasty donation for creating a very special March Forth Moment!

Landing A Major Retailer!

Landing a major retail business that doesn’t have a Champaign County location….that’s a March Forth Moment!
 
The March Forth Moment salutes local officials for securing the Burlington Coat Factory as the 4th major anchor at the Village Mall in Danville.  The Burlington Coat Factory will occupy over 55.0000 square feet of the former JC Penny wing of the mall. Set for an October opening, the Burlington Coat Factory will join four other new retailers in helping to build a stronger retail base right here in Vermilion County.

The 25th Leadership Tomorrow Class Graduates

This week the March Forth Moment salutes the 24 recent graduates of Leadership Tomorrow Class 25.
 
This group of 24 Vermilion County residents completed a 9-month long program
designed to assist emerging community leaders in preparing for positions in local government and community affairs. The program which is conducted by the Vermilion Advantage also requires a minimum of 75-hours of community volunteerism in addition to the assigned course work.  This year’s class project is the redesign of the Sign Post Forest in Downtown Danville.  Improvements are underway now, with the project to be completed soon. High School Students Now Among Best In Country

Danville to Hollywood and now listed among the countries best high school show choirs…That’s a March Forth Moment.
 
Congratulations to the Danville High School Contemporaries and Delegation show choirs; who last month finished with a top 10 national rating at the National Show Choir Finals held in Chicago.  The students from Danville competed against a field of 30 schools representing 13 states in the finals.  The top 10 national rating; caped off a year which included DHS Junior Christian Cunningham winning a national competition.

Local Students Achieve In This March Forth Moment

When local students achieve on a national basis, it’s a March Forth Moment.
 
This week the March Forth Moment salutes a group of students from North Ridge Middle School in Danville, who have earned a trip to the National History Bee in Atlanta.  Peyton Blodgett, Sourin Paturi and Guin Zillman have earned a spot in the national championship competition to be held June 1st,as one of 300 students nationwide. The National History Bee is presented by the History Channel. These Danville students earned their place by competing at the Chicago Regional History Bee with 7th grader Blodgett taking a Top 10 finish and creating another March Forth Moment.

March Forth Moment - April 16

The March Forth Moment honors Danville’s 80th First Citizen, Sybil Mervis.
 
Mrs. Mervis has been honored as the 80th First Citizen by the Danville Chapter of AMBUCS for her lifetime dedication to helping others and giving back to her community. Her passion for children and education is but a small example of why she has carried forward with her mission of volunteer service to others. Mrs. Mervis has served on many local boards and led numerous community campaigns during her lifetime of service.   Mrs. Sybil Mervis, Danville’s 80th First Citizen, truly a March Forth Moment.

March Forth Moment - April 8

The Vermilion Advantage recently released the results of a survey of the top 30 employers in Vermilion County indicating their future plans for job growth in our area.
 
The results indicate over 1800 positions will be filled in the next two years by these large employers.  Among the type of positions being hired includes; Customer Service Representatives, Machine Production Operators, Food Preparation positions and Warehouse sector jobs.  These five categories account for just 50% of the available positions indicated by the large employer group survey.. 
 
The good news for the local work force is that local large employers have a positive outlook and that training programs are available through our local community college.

March Forth Moments - March 25

The March Forth Moment salutes the newest inductees into the Vermilion County Business Hall of Fame. Sited for their individual business success along with a true commitment to building the local community through volunteer work, the class of 2013 includes:
 
The late Art Fleming. Mr. Fleming was a housing and commercial developer in Danville and Vermilion County for over four decades. Many families sleep under roof’s that Mr. Fleming built.  The late Lowell Loving. Mr. Loving was a surveyor and mapper who was active in hundreds of commercial development projects throughout the area.  The final member of the class of 2013 is Henry Clapp. Mr. Clapp and his family have built Full-Fill Industries into what is now considered the largest food aerosol manufacturer in the country.

Survivor Georgetown: Deep Sea Exploration at Mary Miller Junior High


Students will create tribes and develop teamwork and leadership skills as they ''travel'' the oceans of the world June 3rd through 27th, Monday through Thursday, 9am until 12pm. Students that meet the attendance requirement will be able to attend field trips to Forest Glen, Lafayette Water Park and the Shedd Aquarium. Space is limited, so enrollment forms should be submitted ASAP to reserve a spot. SURVIVOR Enrollment Forms can be obtained & submitted to Mary Miller Junior High School or Ridge Farm Elementary School. This is a free program for Mary Miller Junior High students and Ridge Farm Elementary 5th graders. Free transportation, breakfast and a snack will be provided. Armstrong Archery Advertisements


Armstrong Archery is hosting the Cupid Classic Archery Tournament in Armstrong. T-shirt advertisers will have their names listed on the back of t-shirts worn by the archery team as they travel to the World Tournament. Advertisements will also be displayed on the wall at the Cupid Classic. Free Toilet Training Workshop


The Autism Program of Illinois is hosting a free toilet training workshop for individuals with special needs and their parents and professionals. Fight Like A Girl Event for Lori Ostendorf


Fight Like a Girl at an event to benefit Lori Ostendorf. Lori has been diagnosed with brain and lung cancer. She's gone through intense radiation, is currently undergoing chemotherapy, is still trying to work as a letter carrier, and maintain a home for her son, despite all she's enduring. She is out of sick leave, and all proceeds from this benefit will be used to cover living and medical expenses. Benefit is Sunday June 23rd from 3 to 8pm at Sarge's Tap at 409 E. Main in Danville. Taste of Champaign-Urbana seeks Volunteers


Be a part of the Taste of Champaign-Urbana. Champaign Park District is seeking volunteers for the 43rd annual taste of C-U. This food and arts festival is taking place June 21st to 23rd at West Side Park in Champaign. The taste of C-U is the biggest fundraister for the Park District's Youth Scholarship Fund which provides opportunities for youth unable to participate in recreation programs because of economic hardship. 17th Annual Sports Media Camp for Kids


The 17th Annual Sports Media Camp for Kids will be the week of June 17th through June 22nd. The nations leading sports media camp is for students ages 10 through 18. Kids will learn play by play interviewing and sports video skills. Learn from national broadcasters and enjoy a field trip to University of Illinois. Campers will broadcast a Danville Dans game along with hosting a LIVE radio talk show on WDAN.
