Power crews worked into the evening Wednesday (July 10th) trying to restore service to hundreds of Vermilion County customers affected by strong thunderstorms earlier in the day. Ameren Illinois reported more than 450 of its Vermilion County customers were still without power as of 7:30 p.m.
The Vermilion County Emergency Management Agency says the storms knocked out power to around 2,000 customers. The initial assessment of damage by EMA was that 50 to 75 trees or large limbs were down from Danville to Ridge Farm.
Severe Weather Manager Rick Harper said a lot of crops were flattened, and a couple of fires were started by downed power lines. Harper said 1.5 inches of rain fell in Home Gardens, in the area where the Vermilion County Emergency Management Agency office is located. He says radar estimates placed rainfall amounts up to three to three-and-a-half inches across the southern part of the county. Lesser amounts were reported to the north.
Wednesday’s power outages affected numerous businesses in the South Danville area right at the lunch hour rush was about to begin. Parking lots that were normally packed with customers were vacant as the employees at those businesses waited over two hours for power to be restored.
Vermilion County EMA said at least a couple of trees had fallen on homes in Georgetown, and a shed was destroyed in Westville. The strong winds also snapped some power poles east of Ridge Farm.
Many of the reports of scattered light damage came from the Catlin, Westville, Georgetown and Ridge Farm areas. Below is a look at some of the storm's aftermath:
[This is how many of the fields across parts of central and southern Vermilion County looked following Wednesday's strong storms. (See additional story on this web site about the crop damage.) This photo is of a field located just west of Catlin.
[This flooding was occurring Wednesday along Walnut and Coronado Streets in Catlin after the storm dumped heavy rain in the area. One Catlin area farmer told our newsroom he measured nearly four-and-a-half inches of rain from the storm.]
[The storm which blew through parts of Vermilion County on Wednesday left this damage in Catlin. Note the power lines are sagging from the weight of the broken limb. In another part of Catlin live power lines fell on top of an occupied vehicle. Fortunately, the occupants stayed in the vehicle until the power was cut, and were not hurt.]
